Critical Costume 2022 An international conference and exhibition 17 - 20 November 2022

Theme: Connections

Deadline for applications: 10 June 2022

A partnership between Australia (Queensland University of Technology + National Institute Dramatic Arts), Finland (Aalto University) and Brazil (Grafias da Cena Brasil Association)

How does costume create connections?

Costumes build connections and are built through connections - to other artists, between bodies and materials, as well as with audiences and the world around us.

With this theme Critical Costume 2022 aims to unpack the diverse ways in which costume impacts our lives as a creative connective medium. We are interested in hearing about the multiple, maybe surprising linkages and alliances costumes facilitate. These connections, enabled by costume, create and sustain networks of experiences, practices and ideas.

We invite costume practitioners, researchers, and artists working with costume, whether as a performance, installation, community bridge, as research, as a way of thinking, making, or communicating to submit their proposals.

Potential topics could include, but are not restricted to, the following:

  • Connecting cultures through costume
  • Costume dramaturgies as connective materiality
  • Collaborative connections
  • Alliances and entanglements between bodies, materials and environments
  • Revealing the interrelations between production contexts, processes and outcomes
  • Social, political and creative connections
  • Visible and invisible relations between audiences and costume
  • Affinities between costume theory and practice

Established in 2013, Critical Costume is an international research network focused on the promotion of new costume scholarship and practice (see: https://www.criticalcostume.com/).

Critical Costume 2022 (CC2022) is the fifth event within the Critical Costume research platform. It will consist of an online conference and a virtual exhibition. Conference presentations will be delivered live, and not pre-recorded.

Submission formats:

Critical Costume 2022 includes the following presentation formats:

  • Academic papers on current research (15-20 minutes);
  • Flash Talks - short presentations reporting on practice (8-10 minutes);
  • A virtual exhibition of artistic work and practice-based research.

In that regard, we invite all interested parties to submit their proposals stating which presentation format you wish to be considered for:

  • Academic paper presentation (title and 300-word abstract)
  • Flash Talk presentations (title and 200-word summary)
  • Artistic work for the exhibition (title and 200-word description)

Note: You are welcome to submit applications for both the exhibition and the conference. All submissions must indicate their relation to the topic of the event ("Connections").

All submissions to the conference will be double blind peer reviewed. Submissions to the exhibition will be peer reviewed and the final exhibition will be curated.

Accepted contributions will be considered for publication following the model established at previous Critical Costume events: for examples, see: https://www.criticalcostume.com/publications.html
